I'm back and ready to blog!

One of my favorite songs is "If I had a Million Dollars" by the Barenaked Ladies. Fun to sit back and think of all the things I would or could do with a million dollars. Here is what's on my list

Been wanting to work on our bedroom, thinking turquoise, yellow and grey is the way to go.
This is from Bed, Bath and Beyond- love all the cute pillows!
I have been drooling over this shower curtain forever from Anthropologie but $118 for a shower curtain?
Kermit the Frog said "it isn't easy being green" well here are a few easy ways to go green in your everyday life

Stop receiving unwanted mail

Free service to opt out of catalogs, coupons, credit card offers, phone books, circulars and more.
go to: Catalog Choice

Don't buy bottled water
I used to buy bottles of water by the case but my husband and I decided to stop so I bought everyone in the family a cool new water bottle (Sigg's are great!) Easy huh? Need a flavor boost? Add some cut up lemons, limes or even strawberries to you water.

Give up paper towels or limit your use
This was easier than I thought! I went to the dollar store and bought 2 buckets and a bunch or cloth dish rags and towels. I put one bucket next to my washing machine so I can throw clean towels in- easy & convenient and the other bucket I keep under my sink- instead of grabbing a paper towel to dry my hands or wipe up a mess I grab a cloth one.

Get the kids involved
-reusable water bottle, sandwich box and snack containers for school lunch
-my kids love art, we have taught them to use both side of the paper and to make recycling easy we have a container next to the desk for recycling
-plant an herb or vegetable garden with your kids. Great reminder of where our food comes from

Meatless Monday
REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that are accelerating climate change worldwide (far more than transportation). And annual worldwide demand for meat continues to grow. Reining in meat consumption once a week can help slow this trend.
MINIMIZE WATER USAGE. The water needs of livestock are tremendous, far above those of vegetables or grains. An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Soy tofu produced in California requires 220 gallons of water per pound.

Green Cleaning

Wood Floors
Vinegar: Whip up a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar and 30 ounces of warm water. Put in a recycled spray bottle, then spray on a cotton rag or towel until lightly damp. Then mop your floors, scrubbing away any grime.

Porcelain and Tile
Baking Soda and Water: Dust surfaces with baking soda, then scrub with a moist sponge or cloth. If you have tougher grime, sprinkle on some kosher salt, and work up some elbow grease.
Lemon Juice or Vinegar: Got stains, mildew or grease streaks? Spray or douse with lemon juice or vinegar. Let sit a few minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush.
Disinfectant: Instead of bleach, make your own disinfectant by mixing 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap and 20 to 30 drops of tea tree oil. It's easy!

Kitchen Counters
Baking Soda and Water: Reclaim counters by sprinkling with baking soda, then scrubbing with a damp cloth or sponge. If you have stains, knead the baking soda and water into a paste and let set for a while before you remove. This method also works great for stainless steel sinks, cutting boards, containers, refrigerators, oven tops and more.
Kosher Salt and Water: If you need a tougher abrasive sprinkle on kosher salt, and scrub with a wet cloth or sponge.
Natural Disinfectant: To knock out germs without strong products, mix 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap and 20 to 30 drops of tea tree oil. Spray or rub on counter tops and other kitchen surfaces.

Windows & Mirrors
White Vinegar, Water and Newspaper: Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with a gallon of water, and dispense into a used spray bottle. Squirt on, then scrub with newspaper, not paper towels, which cause streaking.
If you're out of vinegar or don't like its smell, you can substitute undiluted lemon juice or club soda.

Carpets & rugs
Club Soda: You've probably heard the old adage that club soda works well on carpet stains. But you have to attack the mess right away. Lift off any solids, then liberally pour on club soda. Blot with an old rag. The soda's carbonation brings the spill to the surface, and the salts in the soda thwart staining.
Cornmeal: For big spills, dump cornmeal on the mess, wait 5 to 15 minutes, and vacuum up the gunk.
Spot Cleaner: Make your own by mixing: 1/4 cup liquid soap or detergent in a blender, with 1/3 cup water. Mix until foamy. Spray on, then rinse with vinegar.
To Deodorize: Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the carpet or rug, using about 1 cup per medium-sized room. Vacuum after 30 minutes.
Clogged Drains
Baking Soda and Boiling Water: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the problem drain, followed by 2 cups of boiling water. If that isn't doing it for you, chase the baking soda with a 1/2 cup of vinegar and cover tightly, allowing the vigorous fizzing of the chemical reaction to break up the gunk. Then flush that with one gallon of boiling water.

Silver
Aluminum Foil, Boiling Water, Baking Soda and Salt: Keep your sterling shined with this seemingly magic method. Line your sink or a bucket with aluminum foil and drop in tarnished silver. Pour in boiling water, a cup of baking soda and a dash of salt. Let sit for a few minutes. The tarnish will transfer from the silver to the foil.
Toothpaste: If you can't immerse your items or are otherwise inclined to polish by hand, rub tarnished silver with toothpaste and a soft cloth. Rinse with warm water and dry. Instead of toothpaste you can substitute a concoction made of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water.
Copper
Ketchup: To keep your copper pots, pans and accents looking bright and shiny, try rubbing with ketchup

The concept behind Advent Conspiracy is simple...
WORSHIP FULLY
It starts with Jesus. It ends with Jesus. This is the holistic approach God had in mind for Christmas. It’s a season where we are called to put down our burdens and lift a song up to our God. It’s a season where love wins, peace reigns, and a king is celebrated with each breath. It’s the party of the year. Entering the story of advent means entering this season with an overwhelming passion to worship Jesus to the fullest.
SPEND LESS
Before you think we’re getting all Scrooge on you, let us explain what we mean. We like gifts. Our kids really like gifts. But consider this: America spends an average of $450 billion a year every Christmas. How often have you spent money on Christmas presents for no other reason than obligation? How many times have you received a gift out of that same obligation? Thanks, but no thanks, right? We’re asking people to consider buying ONE LESS GIFT this Christmas. Just one. Sounds insignificant, yet many who have taken this small sacrifice have experienced something nothing less than a miracle: They have been more available to celebrate Christ during the advent season.
GIVE MORE
God’s gift to us was a relationship built on love. So it’s no wonder why we’re drawn to the idea that Christmas should be a time to love our friends and family in the most memorable ways possible. Time is the real gift Christmas offers us, and no matter how hard we look, it can’t be found at the mall. Time to make a gift that turns into the next family heirloom. Time to write mom a letter. Time to take the kids sledding. Time to bake really good cookies and sing really bad Christmas carols. Time to make love visible through relational giving. Sounds a lot better than getting a sweater two sizes too big, right?

***more to come on this***
LOVE ALL
When Jesus loved, He loved in ways never imagined. Though rich, he became poor to love the poor, the forgotten, the overlooked and the sick. He played to the margins. By spending less at Christmas we have the opportunity to join Him in giving resources to those who need help the most. When Advent Conspiracy first began four churches challenged this simple concept to its congregations. The result raised more than a half million dollars to aid those in need. One less gift. One unbelievable present in the name of Christ.
My family is really excited about this! We took the first step and instead of shopping on Black Friday we spent the day as a family. We watched the Macy's parade that I DVR'd the day before, we had lunch in the park, we went to the Worship Fully event at out church and ended the day making pizza at home together.
Awesome day!Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-44129789794033143752011-11-21T14:14:00.000-06:002011-11-21T14:14:04.461-06:00Family Christmas Scripture Traditions

Beginning on the first day of December, read one scripture a day with your family. Consider using your family’s talents by adding special musical numbers and singing together. When Christmas arrives you will find you have begun a new family tradition that will increase your knowledge of the Savior. Continue your scripture reading time together each day throughout the year to further strengthen the bonds of your family.
Pumpkin Pie
thanks again Paula Deen

Ingredients
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1 cup half-and-half
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional
1 piece pre-made pie dough
Whipped cream, for topping

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Place 1 piece of pre-made pie dough down into a (9-inch) pie pan and press down along the bottom and all sides. Pinch and crimp the edges together to make a pretty pattern. Put the pie shell back into the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2 pounds) and place it in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to color.
For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated.

Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a generous amount of whipped cream.
Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-40750241063561991342011-09-13T17:53:00.000-05:002011-09-14T16:57:53.195-05:00Recipe LinksHere are a few of my favorite weight watchers recipe site, check them out:

Low Fat Crockpot Recipes

Anita's Tried and True Recipes

Skinny Taste

Laa Loosh

Moms Who ThinkJennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-82326880614463820872011-09-13T17:49:00.001-05:002011-09-13T17:49:48.210-05:00Catalina Chicken1 Small bottle of Fat-free Catalina dressing
1 bag of frozen chicken breasts
1 cup of chopped onions
1 cup chopped red bell peppers
Salt and pepper to taste
Set on low for 8-9 hours 0r High for 5-6

serve with roasted potatoes and veggiesJennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-51963073118732998962011-09-13T17:44:00.000-05:002011-09-13T17:46:58.127-05:00Slow Cooker Double Onion Beef Sandwiches(9 Points)
Makes 8 sandwiches

3 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tbs. I was at home because Tuesday was my day off of work, I turned on the Today Show and watched as the events unfolded. Sadness, helplessness, fear- the uncertainty of all that was happening.

That evening I sat with my friends Ann and Nayla glued to the TV. I spent much of the afternoon and evening on the phone trying to get in touch with a friend who had been visiting New York. The wave of relief that they were ok.

I proudly hung my American flag in my window in my apartment. I made red, white and blue ribbons for everyone at work to wear. I raised money for the red cross by making ribbons and asking for donations. I donated money to the 9/11 telethon. I felt I had do to something, anything.

My husband was going through the Police Academy at the time. Can you imagine sitting in the academy on the day? Training to be a first responder while watching the events of 9/11 unfold. 60 police officers died that day.

So tomorrow on September 11 hug and kiss your family and thank your first respondersJennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-52170099804911632152011-06-16T09:30:00.000-05:002011-06-16T09:41:50.360-05:00Handprint Art<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSbrTBUlMBtGIpYj7XmsOaHzIqKh7BGTRSUZnT8CLsFwnljSwLV2L41AKLZ3PnF1eMPxkiaQ0NkbhvaB6wWqU8z2-bM2s_crGCgSMBuuqxf8OsGSwsMa7mNEVSvEnXrthR4-4MDZq3jH_7/s200/but.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618826104196682594" />
from our daily obsession

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdN23b-p9oUsuYm1wsvN9aJsGMh2fsfogOPCPQu-8NUrCtJ5oL6zaGzhUT-eH38xwLd-SRXs-75Bhal4vIgmUnaN7zp4YRltimuJXJWFMdjwLZEKOMP8RpwIw7-aRpEyNbKOxyAVkkY0Ur/s200/flo.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618825580665699602" />
from Skip to My Lou

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 196px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5-AyIMihauID6MoHyTLkwrxqyTQTJHOFmHEeXc108eOcR_8kU-CquSnPAFom5Wm0nRHSIoyreNuFIcxGEjonuBsxt1F0ir4ciRzwxj_YYGsAPIve0odjB6QWCxcB3tcdMFjQ3MJ5-eg6n/s200/ele.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618825194166647362" />
from Crafts-N-Things for childrenJennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-57576162809901875022011-06-14T14:39:00.000-05:002011-06-14T14:42:17.312-05:00Crockpot Barbecue Chicken<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3p6EuHBR46GHtBBP6O8f7w3lP4ApLjcbqQPsWUaNo3qtMOgi8lM5mQkBmDbNUzfJnWcHWiJBHABxOWqkoWCuaBdKh1-Pa0hHCjJlaCVfJDXyh3kWxkin7H3yxFsNOCB0xTL2Dp_nTodVA/s200/bbq+ch" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618162609107312706" />
from Smashed Peas and Carrots

1.5 lbs chicken breasts (or about 4 nice-sized ones)
1 18 oz bottle of barbecue sauce (I like to use Sweet Baby Ray's!)
1/2 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup Italian dressing
2 Tbsp worcestershire sauce

This one's easy! In a small skillet over medium low heat brown the butter by adding it to the pan and let it bubble, stirring constantly. As you start to see some brown in the color take note; it won’t take long to finish from there. Pour immediately into a cold bowl to stop cooking. Cream together the browned butter, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. If you’re at a higher altitude then refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Roll into 1 tsp balls and bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes until the edges are just slightly brown. Let cool completely before adding the frosting.

For the frosting beat together the 4 Tbsp of softened butter with the 1 cup of powdered sugar. Add the lemon zest and half of the juice. If the icing is spreadable, stop there; if it needs more liquid add just a touch of the lemon juice. Spread on the cooled cookies and enjoy!Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057429233698560862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017699076778604950.post-45640170432264137672011-06-01T20:24:00.000-05:002011-06-01T20:46:27.527-05:00Pasta with Asparagus and Pecorinofrom BetsyLife recipe inspired from Cooking Light

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiygfQnYYntUSd-5HohfBtck8pAlHWSPQ0LqBeJ7jfBI_T6qywyXZSPRaaMh3jo6aiz5FQtM8CICidMlklvPP0SLXQTH4swu_SJdvTYM-gOTomDtyIMyLkEjIHZcHOS488zHTvOCGc8Y0Qr/s200/pasta3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613427835234616978" />

•8 ounces uncooked penne pasta
•1 tablespoon kosher salt
•2 tablespoons olive oil
•2 1/2 cups (1-inch) slices asparagus (about 1 pound)
•1 cup fat-free, lower-sodium chicken broth (substitute vegetable stock for vegetarian option)
•1 tablespoon grated lemon rind
•1 garlic clove, minced
•1/4 cup (1 ounce) grated fresh pecorino Romano cheese
•1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
•1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
•2 tablespoons shaved fresh pecorino Romano cheese

1.
